Bilibili Withdraws Kyoukai Senki Anime From Its Catalog For Insulting China

4Gamers reported on Thursday (11/4/2021) that the original anime produced by studio Sunrise Beyond, "Kyoukai Senki" or also known as "AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline" has been withdrawn from the Bilibili platform which is a largest streaming service in China, because it is considered insulting to China by representing China as a villain in the story.

To understand the situation, it's worth reviewing the anime's synopsis first:

"In the year 2061 AD, Japan has lost its sovereignty. The Japanese people spend their days as oppressed citizens after being divided and ruled by four major trading factions. The country is at the forefront of the world after the deployment of the AMAIM - a special humanoid mobile weapon - by each of the economic blocs in command."

The controversy then starts from the fifth episode, and this fragment is important because it is assumed that the red character represents "China". In addition, it has been claimed that they are depicted as characters who oppress Japan in the fictional story of this anime.

In the fifth episode that has been aired, the story of one of the "Asian Army troops" oppressing people in Japan begins to be explained. The reason why Chinese netizens suspect that the anime hints at China is because the clothes of the "Asian Army" and the vehicles and weapons they occupy are all red, and there are markings in simplified Chinese characters.

Therefore, Chinese netizens believe that "Asian Army" actually refers to China. Furthermore, Chinese netizens also allege that, when comparing the history of China and Japan, AMAIM, which reverses the position of the oppressed parties, is basically a deliberate distortion of history.

Meanwhile, the original anime kyoukai Senki (AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline) produced by Sunrise Beyond has officially started broadcasting since October 5, 2021, with episode 5 being released on November 2, 2021, which later became a controversy.
